The Government Building at Chalfont Drive, Nottingham is of a heavily protected concrete structure constructed in two phases: c.1952/3 and c.1963/65.
The initial 1950s construction was that of a standard design Regional Commissioner’s Office ‘Type A’ (semi- sunken) later known as a ‘Regional War Room’ (RWR) or simply ‘War Room’.
This was extended and enlarged in the 1960s by the construction of a unique ‘Regional Seat of Government’ (RSG) extension, abutting but also straddling the primary phase RWR and structurally amalgamated into it to form a heavily protected redoubt, primarily protected against nuclear fallout.
The structure remained in use with little modification as an RSG then Sub-Regional Control (SRC) probably until the early 1970s. The building was then used for various storage functions until closure.
Significantly, the building’s exterior and perhaps more importantly much of the interior remains almost complete ‘as originally built’.
The Nottingham War Rooms building is situated within 2.1 hectares of developable land. The wider site is allocated for residential development in the Nottingham Local Plan and is considered an appropriate location for new homes.
