Public Sector

The city is home to public sector bodies such as Government Office for the East Midlands, East Midlands Development Agency and Ofsted.

In addition to the provision of local services, the sector in Nottingham also
has a cluster of nationally focused Public Sector organisations.

The largest of these is HM Revenue and Customs, which established a major presence in Nottingham in 1995. HM Revenue and Customs currently has around 2,000 staff in Nottingham. Others include the Land Registry, British Geological Survey, the Environment Agency and Driving Standards Agency (DSA). The DSA has its head office in Nottingham and employs nearly 500 people, plus 100 consultants, and focuses on policy work.

Nottingham is also a centre for regional administration with the Regional
Development Agency for the East Midlands (emda) and the Government Office for the East Midlands based in the City Centre.

Education is the largest sub-sector with over 35,000 jobs and, in addition to schools, colleges and the universities; Nottingham is home to the National College for Leadership of Schools and Children's Services, and regional offices of Ofsted and the Open University.

Other top high profile organisations include HMP Service Agency, Legal Services Commission (LSC), Natural England (formerly DERFRA), Valuation Office Agency (VOA) and ACAS.
