Nottingham Conference Centre opens its doors for business29 March 2010
Nottingham's newest, purpose-built conference centre has hit the ground running in its opening week.
In that time the Nottingham Conference Centre, part of Nottingham Trent University's City campus, has already overseen six events - including two conferences, an exhibition and breakfast meeting - resulting in over 1000 delegates and visitors passing through its doors!
The venue is based in two Grade II* listed buildings - Newton and Arkwright - in the centre of Nottingham. The £90 million redevelopment of the buildings is part of the most ambitious regeneration programme the University has undertaken to date, with the aim of creating one of the best city-centre campuses in the UK.
The Nottingham Conference Centre offer includes 10 conference suites, all with dedicated AV and catering facilities. Smaller private meeting rooms are also available on request. These facilities are housed in Newton, a striking art-deco style building opened in 1958.
For an even more 'historical' experience, organisations can hire rooms in the University's 128-year-old Arkwright building, which was once the learning place of the celebrated author, D. H. Lawrence. The Old Chemistry Theatre, where silicone polymers were discovered over 100 years ago, is particularly spectacular with an ornate roof and stunning Victorian architecture.
In addition to the state-of-the-art facilities, the Nottingham Conference Centre also benefits from Nottingham Trent University's excellent green credentials. The university is currently ranked number one in the People and Planet Green League for its commitment to environmental management and performance.
Features include Newton's sedum roof, one of the largest green roofs in the country (3000m²), providing a haven for insects and other wildlife whilst absorbing carbon dioxide; and an impressive recycling record which currently stands at 66% of all waste produced by the University.
The conference team is led by manager, Andrew Keen and Jillian Miles, who is operations manager. Between them they have 30 years of industry experience.
Andrew said: "There does seem to be a real buzz about the venue which is very much down to where we are. We're incredibly lucky to be based in two iconic buildings, probably two of the best known landmarks in Nottingham. The location is ideal as we're located in the heart of the city, so delegates will be able to benefit from all that Nottingham has to offer.
"Although we're the new kids on the block we have got very ambitious plans for Nottingham Conference Centre. We've already secured many bookings for this year and with the significant investment that Nottingham Trent University has made, we believe we have a fantastic, cost-effective, offer - a unique venue incorporating stunning facilities with the very latest equipment and service provision."
