East Midlands to get £22m to help boost economy

The East Midlands is to get a third share of new government funding to create the new manufacturing jobs of the future.

Business Secretary Lord Mandelson has announced a £64.4m package of investment to be distributed by the nine regional development agencies.

The Nottingham-based East Midlands Development Agency (Emda) has been awarded £22m.

Emda said it wpuld help the development of businesses in the region.

The funding will support initiatives in areas such as green energy provision, low carbon manufacturing and support for science and innovation.

Emda chairman, Bryan Jackson, said: "We recognise that it is vitally important to support innovation in the region.

"The East Midlands has long been a region of innovators. The jet engine, DNA fingerprinting, ibuprofen and the MRI scanner were all invented here.

"The new funding combined with the exciting vision of the new innovation strategy, will help to support a new generation of innovators, further establishing the East Midlands' reputation as an innovative region at the cutting edge of technology."
