New jobs as Boots' bespoke medicines division expands

3 March 2010

A specialist manufacturing wing of Alliance Boots is set to create 50 jobs after opening a laboratory.

BCM Specials - part of Boots Contract Manufacturing - makes bespoke medicines for customers from community pharmacies to vets.

It makes medication in different strengths or formats, such as where the patient needs a drug to be stronger than normal or as a liquid instead of a tablet - a market growing by 10% year-on-year in the UK alone.

The latest jobs are in addition to 60 created over the past few years.

Alliance Boots executive chairman Stefano Pessina, joined Alex Gourlay, chief executive of the health and beauty division, to officially open the laboratory in front of 100 staff.

Mr Pessina said: "This investment will enable BCM Specials to continue to expand and to provide a quality service that better meets the need and expectations of our most demanding customers.

"By making the right investments now, we will help secure a better future for our company and our teams."

BCM Specials, established over 70 years ago, is one of the largest bespoke medicines manufacturers in the UK. It also makes materials for clinical trials.

Jen Postlethwaite, general manager of BCM Specials, said: "By ensuring we have cutting-edge facilities and equipment, as well as a thorough training programme for our employees, we are able to meet the growing requirement for bespoke medicines and create jobs at the same time."
